When a member of our community's hard work pays off, we can't help but celebrate them.

We are constantly inspired by Chris and his amazing business Water Mate: the world's first thermometer designed specifically for cold water! The Water Mate helps cold plungers, wild dippers and adventurers accurately measure water temperature and set time limits for your dips using our patent-pending waterproof mechanical timer. Helping you avoid over exposure and build up your tolerance over time to the cold!

We had a chat with Chris about his business and why he loves to come to Lifework Communities.

1. Why did you join lifework?

I needed a place to run my company, one that was convenient and away from my house. I love how spacious Lifework is, and with it being surrounded by nature, I can be productive whilst achieving my desired healthy balance.

2. Since working at Lifework, your business has hit many highs and many learning curves. What have been some of your biggest challenges, and how have you overcome them?

Raising investment in the worst time in a decade, navigating supply chain problems, and trying to do everything myself. They're all mistakes I have learnt from, and it has pushed me to surround myself with a great team who help me manage things in which I don't have as much experience yet. This change resulted in our biggest investment round in February!

3.  What key piece of advice would you give to early stage entrepreneurs?

READ. Before you do anything significant in your business, take the time to read and learn the fundamentals of running a business. Many would say, "just start, and learn along the way." I think that works for some, but it can sometimes do more damage than good.

I recommend people read:

How to be a Founder By Alice Bentinck and Matt Clifford

The Mum Test By Rob Fitzpatrick

Financial Intelligence By Joe Knight, John Case, and Karen Berman

Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard

4. If you could invite any person (alive or dead!) to speak at a lifework community day, who would it be?

Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia.

5.  What’s your lifework balance?

I prefer to strive for a work-life harmony. When running your own company, You find yourself going through different seasons of working with various deadlines and responsibilities. To me, a balance indicates that I have to match the other aspects of my life to the amount of work, but it's not always about getting it level; it's about keeping harmony in my life that allows me to feel fulfilled.

In my current life, that's working half days, spending the morning getting out into nature by cycling, walking or going for cold plunges. I then spend my afternoon doing more focused work, with the eventual goal of achieving a four-day work week.
